New Advice on Children’s Cough and Cold Treatments
As of the 2nd March 2009 there has been a change in advice for some children’s cough and cold medicines.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has advised that cough and cold medicines with certain active ingredients should no longer be labelled for use in children under 6 and medicines with certain combinations of active ingredients will be available for use in children 6 and above up until March 2010, but after this date they will no longer be labelled for use in children under 12.
Tixylix® will be updating the following cough and cold medicines to reflect new advice from the MHRA:
Tixylix® Dry Cough
Tixylix® Chesty Cough
Tixylix ® Night Cough
Tixylix® Cough and Cold
Tixylix ® Baby Syrup is not affected and can continue to be used for children aged 3 months and over.
Please do not be concerned if you have given any of the affected medicines to your child recently as these medicines have been used safely for decades in the UK.
The MHRA have not requested that the affected products are removed from shelves and so they will continue to be sold for use in children aged 6 and over. However, over time the instructions on the packaging will be updated and in some cases certain products will be phased out by March 2010 at the latest.
